Tradie invoice higher than the quote: what to check

Whether the work was plumbing, electrical, landscaping or general maintenance, start by confirming the total price difference. Then check the labour, materials, call-out fees and variations that may explain it.

Compare my documents

Start with the overall price

Compare the accepted quote total with the final invoice total. Check the amounts before tax first, then tax. When both totals are the same, scope wording may still deserve review but there is no overall price increase.

What to check next

Check 1

Call-out and attendance fees

Check whether a call-out, travel or site attendance fee was included, excluded or added separately on the invoice.

Check 2

Labour

Compare hourly rates, number of workers and billed hours. A labour line can increase through either the rate or the quantity.

Check 3

Materials

Match major materials and quantities. Check whether a quoted allowance was replaced with an actual cost or whether delivery was added.

Check 4

Variations and extra work

Connect additional work to the relevant approval. Do not treat a renamed or bundled line as a new charge when the document totals reconcile.

Check 5

Deposits, discounts and tax

Confirm all credits were applied, then review the tax calculation separately from the before-tax difference.

Questions to ask before paying

  • Is this call-out or attendance fee already included in the quoted price?
  • Did the hourly rate, number of workers or total hours change?
  • Which material quantities or prices changed from the quote?
  • Which approved variation supports this additional work?
  • Where have my deposit and agreed discounts been credited?

Common questions

Does a differently worded invoice line mean a new charge?

Not necessarily. Trades often bundle labour and materials differently on the final invoice. Check whether the total changed and whether the wording maps to the quoted work.

Should I compare tax-inclusive or tax-exclusive prices?

Use both, but compare the before-tax amounts first. Show the tax effect separately so the same increase is not counted twice.

What if the invoice is not itemised?

Compare the bundled total at document level, then ask for an itemised breakdown if the scope or calculation remains unclear.
